Dolch Books and Resouces

Funny Dolch Word Book - These inexpensive little books are great in helping develop independent reading skills in children. It is funny too. The author's website, Learning Abilities Books, has excerpts from the books. Almost all of the words in the books are Dolch sight words so the reader will practice while enjoying the stories, poems, and fables. Part of the reason I think my children like this book is they don't feel like they are practicing. Especially because my kids really hate to read flash cards. Stories have always seemed to work better.
Perhaps you can think of it like riding a bike, if you want to learn to ride you need to get on one and experience riding. This book lets them experience the words. There enough words on each page that they aren't just guessing. But there are not too many words on a page. They really feel like they are accomplishing independence with these books!

Funny Dolch Word Book #2 - includes charming stories, poems and word searches that are based on the Dolch Word List, the most commonly found words in the English language. Each word is presented numerous times after it is introduced, thus making it easier for beginning readers to learn and expand their sight vocabluary. Books like this one are a must for every beginning reader or child with a reading deficiency. In the Learning Disabilities Support web site there is a page on Choosing the Right Reading Approach that discusses the importance of the Dolch vocabulary list.
